Green Holidays

Just read in newspapers today about the melting of Gangotri glacier in Himalayas , which is the source of Holy river Ganges , and receding about 1 km every year.    It is predicted that Gangotri glacier will disappear in another 50 years.  What happens to Holy Ganges?  Where would the devout Hindu pilgrims go to shed their sins? The rest 9000 odd glaciers in Himalayas are also receding at a real fast pace.  It is predicted that Polar bears will lose their habitat in next 35 years max, so they also disappear, next to go will be Penguins.  Where and what are we heading for? No glaciers, increase in sea level, did I hear disaster.   When will this plundering of our natural resources stop?  What penalty will our next generation pay and how soon?  Could it be worse than a Nuclear Bomb, perhaps yes.    For our comforts we are letting go of the beautiful species of nature.

There is no time to think, it is time to act.  It is time to take some serious stock of what is about to happen, the life styles that we are leading, needs to change.  We need to arrest the decay at earliest possible.

Tourism Industry is considered as the biggest Industry in the World as far as Employment is concerned.   How can we all in the trade help to arrest this phenomenon?  It is time that we look at what we can do, however small the contribution it is, but if we manage to delay the inevitable, it will mean a lot to lot many.

There is a buzz around to recycle rubbish, going easy on gas heaters, and looking for more ETHICAL ways of taking a break, a holiday.  It is time for Green Travel, Green Holidays.  A low Carbon Holiday, where you will not over indulge in CO2, a low carbon lifestyle.

We all directly and indirectly in many ways contribute towards Carbon emission into the environment.   Now, there are ways to calculate the impact our life styles have on the environment, whether it is traveling by air, car, bicycle, equipments we use, Air-Conditioners, Kitchen appliances etc.  Once you calculate how much carbon you are emitting into the environment thru various daily actions, then there are standards and measures to offset your carbon emission.

Ask your operator if they have a ethical policy? Are they committed to reduce, water use, waste, and minimize damage to Wildlife, usage of local staff, local produce, and fair wages to local staff.   Because without Wildlife there will be no Wildlife Tourism.  No Polar Bears, no Penguins, shortly no Tigers, the list is endless.

So come and be a part of the movement called "A low carbon Holiday " with us.
