Mahua Resort

Mahua Kothi, Bandhavgarh National Park

Mahua Kothi Safari Lodge located in Bandhavgarh National Park, is operated by the Taj Safaris. Named after a beautiful tree Madhuca Indica, this Lodge has 12 huts, locally known as Kutiyas. Built in traditional local style with comfortable interiors. Spread in a over 40 acres of grassland, this Lodge has often seen Tigers spending time inside the campus. A renowned Tiger B2 once killed a cattle, dragged it into Mahua Kothi, and spend good 4 days enjoying his meal at leisure in the comfortable environs of Mahua Kothi. The Lodge also has a nice spa if you have time to indulge yourself. The personal butlers will take care of your meal and beverage requireents comfortably. It is conveniently located just 10 minutes drive from the Tala gate. Every vehicle of Mahua Kothi is specially designed for comfort of it's guests. Their natutalists who also drive these vehicles consciously share lot of information about Bandhavgarh with their guests.

The name Mahua Kothi draws its inspiration from one of India's most beautiful trees, the Madhuca Indica, or as it is commonly known, the Mahua or butter tree. Pronounced 'ma-hoo-a', this tree with its fleshy off–white flowers plays a central role in festivals and rituals. The Lodge sprawls over the 40 acre grounds, just 20 minutes from the park entrance. The original kothi (homestead) comprises the guest areas and has been beautifully renovated, and the guest accommodation is all brand new.

Each of the twelve charming guest suites – or kutiyas (jungle village huts) – are built in the vernacular style of Central India, affectionately known as 'MP Chic' (MP being the state of Madhya Pradesh). Each is accessed through private courtyards with shaded seating and traditional mud floors. Interiors include wooden shutters, tapered mud coloured walls in lime and earth washes (finished by hand), open rafters with roughly hewn wooden beams, and handmade pottery roof tiles. Floors are dressed in katni stone strips set in lime mortar. Each ensuite bathroom features twin hand basins, indoor shower, bath and separate w.c. Richly coloured local textiles, used throughout, are in shades of rust and burnt orange. Each kutiya features roll-down mats to keep out the early morning sun, as well as overhead fans and air conditioning.

Guests delight in the yoga amenities provided in a basket (complete with instructions), as well as traditional Indian games of marbles and Chaupad. Kettles of boiling water on chulhas (charcoal burners) are brought out with early morning tea to the kutiyas. Bicycles, parked in the kutiya courtyards, are an invitation to explore.

Savor a mahua martini along with Dinner under the mahua tree - A special drink made from the flowers of the Mahua tree.  Sit around a bon fire under the sprawling branches of this tree and enjoy unusual cocktails rustled up by the bartender, and delicate kebabs fresh from the tandoor before your eyes.

Star gazing, Hukkah evenings - Sit on the terrace of the 'Kothi' or homestead puffing on an aromatic hukkah or hubble-bubble and watch the pink hues of the sky at dusk.  Later indulge in learning a few tips on star of the glittering star studded sky.

Village visit & School engagement programmes - If you are keen to get a closer look at the simple village life - drive to a tiny tribal village of the Baiga's hemmed in on three sides by thick forests.  There are some community development initiatives sponsored by the lodge that can be experienced.

Take a nature walk with our naturalist - Take a guided nature walk with your naturalist, to look for the little things that you normally would pass by on a drive.  Watch out for Brightly coloured blister beetles, the industrious dung beetles and smell the fragrance of the wild flowers that line the pathway.
