Festival Extensions Options

India is a land of diversity. This diversity of culture can be best experienced through various festivals celebrated across India on different occasions. These festivals have religious, cultural and historical significance and people of the region celebrate it with much fervour. We are sharing the details of some of these festivals which can be experienced if the date of the tour coincides with the festivals. Though most of the festivals are only for a day but some of them even longer for which an advance planning is required to extend the stay for the duration of the festival.

Magh Bihu Festival

Today, following a morning safari and lunch, we will embark on a drive to the Kaziranga National Orchid and Biodiversity Park, situated in close proximity to the national park. This visit offers a unique opportunity to witness the local people’s performances in celebration of Magh Bihu. Additionally, you will have the chance to immerse yourself in the festivities, taste the local cuisine, and experience the rich cultural tapestry of the region firsthand.

Bihu the heart of Assamese culture, consists of three festivals reflecting the agricultural cycle: Bohag Bihu in April heralds the new year and spring, symbolizing renewal; Magh Bihu in January celebrates harvest completion with feasts and bonfires, embodying gratitude; and Kati Bihu in October, a quieter observance, marks a period of hopeful prayers for a fruitful harvest. These festivals together highlight Assam’s rich traditions and vibrant community life.

Magh Bihu, or Bhogali Bihu, specifically marks the end of the harvest season with a focus on communal feasting. Uruka night, the eve of Magh Bihu, brings people together for a grand meal by a bonfire. The following morning involves rituals like bathing and burning the Meji, praying, and offering Maah Khorai and Pithas. The day’s breakfast, Jalpaan, features a spread of local delicacies like Chira, Akhoi, and Pithas, shared among family and friends, showcasing Assamese culinary richness, and fostering a sense of community and abundance.
